Prenatal testing is the best strategy for reducing the burden of genetic disorders and congenital disabilities that causes significant postnatal functional impairment. Therefore, all women should be offered the option of aneuploidy screening or diagnostic testing for fetal genetic disorders, regardless of maternal age, ideally at the first prenatal visit. However, the major challenge is identifying high-risk pregnancy as the clinical presentation is highly variable, and even with severe disease, a woman can be asymptomatic. Considering the high prevalence of pre-eclampsia, FIGO recommends screening all pregnant women for preterm pre-eclampsia by the first trimester combined test with maternal risk factors as a one-step procedure.
Providing women with the full spectrum of diagnostic tests allows them to make informed choices, increase the number of pregnancies, reduce unsafe abortions and maternal deaths, and have a healthy sexual life. Nevertheless, it should be remembered that a single procedure or an appropriate diagnostic test undoubtedly leads to successful pregnancy and the birth of a healthy baby.2
