Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) is a blood test that can reveal inflammatory activity in your body. It is not a stand-alone diagnostic tool, but it can help your doctor diagnose or monitor the progress of an inflammatory disease. ESR might be useful when evaluating unexplained fever, some types of arthritis and symptoms that affect your muscles. It can also help determine the severity of your inflammatory response and monitor the effect of treatment.

​What is the ESR Test?

The Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate test or the ESR test is done when the doctor suspects that you have a high level of inflammation in your body. It is also known as the Sed Rate test.

Usage

ESR is an acute phase reactant which indicates presence and intensity of an inflammatory process.It is never diagnostic of a specific disease. It is used to monitor the course or response to treatment of certain diseases. Extremely high levels are found in cases of malignancy, hematologic diseases, collagen disorders and renal diseases.
