HCV spreads through contaminated blood during blood transfusion, needle stick injuries, sharing of needles by drug users, dirty needles used for tattoos & through semen. Symptoms include bruising easily, itchy skin, fluid in abdomen, weight loss, swelling in the legs & confusion. This test gives the quantity of the virus in your body.

Real Time RT- PCR
3 mL (2 mL min.) Serum from 2 SST's OR 3 mL (2 mL min.) Plasma from 2 Lavender Top (EDTA) tubes. Separate serum / plasma aseptically within 2 hours of collection. Ship refrigerated or frozen. 12 hours fasting is recommended. Whole blood samples are not acceptable.
This test is intended for use as an aid in management of HCV infected patients and is not intended for use in the initial diagnosis or confirmation of HCV infection. This test quantifies HCV RNA of free HCV virions in serum / plasma. HCV RNA is a marker of viral replication and persistence is associated with disease progression. This test can be used to monitor response to therapy.
