Overview

What is LIPID PROFILE WITH LIPOPROTEIN ELECTROPHORESIS ?

Indians are at very high risk of developing Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) like heart attack & stroke. They usually get the disease at an early age, have a more severe form of the disease and have poorer outcome as compared to the western populations. This is due to high prevalence of plaque producing fats (lipids), obesity & increased transfats in our diet. Among the various risk factors for ASCVD such as high lipids in your blood, diabetes, sedentary lifestyle, high blood pressure, smoking, genetic predisposition etc., high lipids is the most important cause. It is important to measure your lipid levels in the blood at regular intervals. This monitoring should start as early as 20 years of age. As per the Lipid Association of India (LAI 2020), most important target goal is LDL cholesterol level in your blood. If you have high levels, your doctor will start Statins. By changing one's lifestyle, lipid levels can be controlled to a large extent.

Usage

Indians are at very high risk of developing Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), they usually get the disease at an early age, have a more severe form of the disease and have poorer outcome as compared to the western populations. This is due to high prevalence of Atherogenic dyslipidemia, central abdominal adiposity & increased transfats in our diet. Among the various risk factors for ASCVD such as dyslipidemia, Diabetes mellitus, sedentary lifestyle, Hypertension, smoking, genetic predisposition etc., dyslipidemia has the highest population attributable risk for MI. Hence monitoring lipid profile regularly for effective management of dyslipidemia remains one of the most important healthcare targets for prevention of ASCVD. This monitoring should start as early as 20 years of age. Many individuals remain asymptomatic before they get heart attack. ASCVD risk helps to identify high risk individuals even when there is no symptom related to heart disease. ASCVD risk category helps clinician to decide when to consider therapy and what should be the treatment goal.
