POTASSIUM, SERUM

The Potassium Serum test measures the amount of potassium in the blood.  

Potassium can be measured individually, but it is often included in broader tests such as an electrolyte panel, kidney panel, or metabolic panel. 

The Potassium Serum test is most commonly used  

• As part of a routine health checkup 
• Diagnosis or monitor electrolyte imbalance, heart problems, high blood pressure, kidney disease 
• Diagnose abnormal potassium level in individuals experiencing symptoms such as  
  • Irregular heartbeat 
  • Muscle weakness 
  • Nausea 
  • Fatigue 
  • Muscle cramps 
  • Constipation 
• Diagnosis of metabolic acidosis, or alkalosis 
• Monitor side effects of certain medications that affect potassium levels 

A healthcare professional will draw a blood sample from a vein in the arm. There are no special preparations required for Potassium Serum test, though your doctor may instruct you if any specific preparations are required for the test. 

The Potassium Serum test is a safe, standard test with very minimal risks involved such as 

• Bleeding 
• Light headedness 
• Bruising 
• Infection 

The Potassium Serum test results are measured in milliequivalents per litre (mEq/L). The normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories.  

The doctor will evaluate the results based on health, gender, age, and other factors. 

High potassium levels in the blood can reduce heart muscle activity whereas low potassium levels in the blood can cause heart problems such as irregular heartbeat.
